Tip Talk Thursday: Health Tips for Men

Understanding how to better your health shouldn’t be something new. Everyone talks about it. Eat well, exercise, get your sleep, drink your water. But there are things men especially should consider!

Here are some quick tips:
  • Know your risk of heart disease. Men are at risk for heart disease so it’s important to know what YOUR risk is and what to look for
  • Don’t blame what you ate. A study done of 2,404 heart attack patients showed that 40% of people waited 6 hours before seeking treatment. If you feel a persistent, uncomfortable pressure in your chest, head to an ER. Better safe than sorry
  • Boost your brain power by walking daily if you don’t engage in physical activity. Research has found that 4 months of daily walking improved mental agility in 55-75 year olds.
  • Have a group of friends. One study estimated that being social can gain you nearly 5 extra years of life. In addition not having friends can be detrimental to your well-being and health. Positive social relationships have been comparable to smoking and alcohol consumption for increasing mortality risk.
  • Find your ideal bedtime. Unsure? Move your bedtime 30 minutes until you wake up without an alarm
  • Eat more soluble fibre. It lowers blood cholesterol
  • Eat breakfast. Studies have found that people who lost a significant amount of weight and kept it off for more than 5 years found that 78% ate breakfast 7 days a week.
  • Troubles with peeing? Answer these questions below and score them with a rating from 0 (no troubles) to 5 (almost always) then tally up your score:
—Had the sensation of not emptying your bladder completely after you finished urinating?
—Had to urinate again less than 2 hours after urinating?
—Found that the flow of urine stopped and started several times?
—Found it difficult to postpone urination?
—Had a weak urine stream
—Had to push or strain to begin urination?
—Had to get up to urinate after going to bed
If your score is 18 or above talk to your doctor as it may be signs of prostate troubles
  • Skip the second cup of coffee. 2 cups of coffee adds about 16 beats per minute and makes you more irritable and anxious
  • Eat more garlic. It makes your aorta more flexible, increases circulation, and can decrease your total cholesterol by almost 10%. It also helps fights infections!
  • Having lower back pain? Try taking your wallet out of your back pocket. Sitting on your wallet can out pressure on your sciatic nerve.
  • Get some sun. Just 15-20 minutes of sunlight exposure can supply you with a well needed dose of vitamin D, which can help reduce your chances of diabetes, heart attacks, heart failure, high blood pressure, heart disease, and maybe even the common cold.

There are plenty of others and always listen to your health professional regarding any individualized tips and recommendations based on you!
