Self-care for Men

Self-care has often been attributed to the females in our lives. Fluffy robes, face mask, candles, and a bubble bath. Isn't that what most would think when we hear the term self-care? But men, it's just as important for YOU to engage in self-care as well. In order to be able to fully tackle life's stresses and expectations, we want to make sure we are at the best condition we can be. Self-care isn't about just taking a bath or drinking wine. It's about being intentional about doing something that brings us closer to ourselves and becoming more calm. It's about recharging ourselves and addressing our needs so we can be there 100%. As the famous saying goes, you can't pour from a glass that's empty.

So what do you really get out of it?

  • Helps our health
  • Helps our mental health
  • More available and present for our loved ones
  • Decreases our stress levels
  • Increase our resilience
  • Allows us to access higher levels of creativity and clear thinking are enhanced
  • Perform better

You want to be able to address several different facets of your wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and so forth. So here are some ideas:

  • Get a massage: have tense neck muscles, back muscles, or just need overall relief? Massages are a great way to unwind, relax, and can address any physical needs you have as well. Make it a couples massage and it could knock off a social self-care as well.
  • Meditate: This is something you could do at your desk, in your car, before bed, or while you're brushing your teeth. Apps such as Headspace, Simple Habit, or Calm could help. Check our blog post on other apps and tips on meditation here.
  • Sweat out the stress: set aside some time to do a quick workout. It addresses not only your physical needs but your emotional as well.
  • Spend more time with friends and family: your schedule may be busy, but it is essential for you have socialize with people you consider to matter the most. This may include people aside from your partner! Grow your social circle!
  • Take a break at work: don't skip out on you lunch, take a short walk around the office when you need to refocus, or jus get up and grab a drink. Your mind needs a break and to refuel. Recognize your burnout signs and listen to your body.
  • Get regular sleep: if sleep is something you struggle with start here. Sleep impacts our whole functioning, so it's amazing what can happen and what we can do once we get a solid night sleep.
  • Look at what you eat: with a busy life you may be guilty of having quick, instant dinners, or fast food. But a well balanced diet can give us the energy we need to get through the day. Look into 30 minute meals, one pot meals, slow cookers or pressure cookers, or subscription recipe boxes when you have a time crunch or are lacking some ideas!
Remember, self-care isn't just what you do, it's a mindset. So find what works for you, what ignites your passions, and makes you feel better. Above are just a few ideas but there are so many others you can try. Just be intentional and make it for YOU!
