Todays quick talk will be around the importance of water.
Now I know most of us know that we SHOULD be drinking water, but does anyone actually really know why?
Aside from flushing out our system there are some other overlooked benefits like:
- It increases our brain power and energy levels: did you know your brain is made up of 73% water, so water helps it focus, stay alert, and concentrate. Even as little as 2% dehydration has been shown to affect your moods, reduce cognitive and motor skills, make you more sensitive to pain, and affects your memory.
- Helps with healthy weight maintenance and loss: water helps you feel more full and aides in the removal of fat-by products
- Flush out toxins: your body flushes waste through sweat and urination. Consumption of water also reduces your risk of kidney stones (Brittany can attest that they are bloody painful) and a urinary tract infection.
- Maintains regularity: According to the Mayo clinic, water helps us digest food through nutrient absorption and prevents constipation.
- Boosts Immune System: water has been found to be directly related to a healthy immune system! How? By one, carrying oxygen to your body's cells to promote proper functioning, and two, by flushing harmful toxins out.
- Prevents cramps and sprains: Water acts as a natural lubricant between your joints and muscles, so if you are prone to either of these- add more water!
- Prevents back aches: Did you know that the bones of your vertebrae are supported by discs, and in the center nucleus of these discs is water? A lack of water can therefore compromise these discs and lead to back pain.
These are just a few of the many reasons why you should be drinking water! How much should you be drinking?
The general rule is:
- Women should drink about 11 cups of fluid a day
- Men should drink about 16 cups of fluid a day
So what are you waiting for? Get drinking! And if you're like Brittany and don't like the taste of water, find ways to make it more appealing like healthy additives or fruit infusions!
